I have to say that I really enjoyed our guest speakers Robin Gerber and Dean Nance Lucas. I took so much away from their discussions and I liked how they answered our generated questions. I thought that I learned a lot from them since they emphasized the importance of being authentic and to do what is right for you. There are so many times where I have thought of being a doctor or lawyer, but deep down I knew that I didn't want a career as either of those. Being an educator is what is "right" for me and I know that because I am passionate about it and wouldn't mind doing it for the rest of my life.
I found Robin Gerber to be completely real. We often see our "leaders" as infallable people who always make the right decisions, but, I thought that it was interesting that Robin actually dropped out of college. (Not quite something you hear all the time). I gained a respect for her because of it, too, because she acknowledged in herself that she was afraid, but took control of her fear and knew that she had to go back....to make a difference in the future.
Dean Lucas was amazing as well. I learned so much from her, especially when she talked about balancing family and taking risks. She made a comment, "pay attention to your own happiness." I believe that one statement embodies what it means to be successful. In our text Closing the Leadership Gap, Wilson describes in an entire chapter just how important authenticity is. I liked how all of those underlying themes were presented through what we've been reading this semester and our guest speakers.

For me Dean Lucas was my favorite, but also I see Dean Lucas as a mentor type like figure becuase she is very engaged with leadership and ethics. But what I admired about dean Lucas is I thought she would have had a set path in life but i loved her sittuation of changing her major of being a doctor and going to medical school and changed it to education. She said her only regret was wondering what life would have been like as a doctor, but she is very passionate about her work today. I admire that she took a stand on her life choices and she rockes those choices today. Dean lucas is constantly putting life to the test, litterly. She is always taking her life experiences and apply it to theories and teaching those theories so that other people grow and learn from her experiences. I also enjoyed her ethical delimma story. It goes to show that even the greatest leaders are human and make difficult choicse. The important part is that they stand by their choice when they know what they are doing is ethical and right. And also it is important to admit when you are not right. Learn from your choices was another message from Dean Lucas. Its just like the leadership books said, "Dont be afriad of a position because you are afraid to be seen as power hunger, but take a position becuase you are qualifited and passionate"
I definately have to agree with your statement Kelly that most of the time we see leaders that are inflotted versions of themselves. We have to find the leaders that are passionate about what they do and that they are really the people that they want people to think that they are. I find it really hard to decide where to go after college, a decision that becomes more overwhelming with each passing day. But I think that listening to all of these incredible women has made me think, I do not have to have a set path in life. We have to find what makes us happy and that is where our "perfect" job is. Robin and Dean Lucas both showed their true passion and self to us as they answered the questions that we had made up for them.
While reading books about great leaders and how we are influenced by them is important. The power of someone speaking to us and coming down to our level and making their passions our passion is far more empowering.
